Back in Alaska: This Wild Adventure Didn’t Disappoint—Bears, Glaciers, and the Arctic Circle

Alaska has always held a special place in my heart, and this latest trip reminded me why it’s one of the most incredible destinations on Earth. I was only here this past February, but something about Alaska keeps calling me back. Starting my adventure in Anchorage, I embarked on a road trip down to Homer, a place lovingly referred to as a “quaint little drinking village with a fishing problem.” Homer is the kind of town where you feel like you’re stepping into a postcard, with its charming docks, friendly locals, and endless views of Kachemak Bay.

The Bear-Spotting Adventure in Katmai National Park

The next morning, I boarded a small bush plane bound for Katmai National Park, a remote area famous for its bear population. As we flew into the wilderness, anticipation grew at the thought of seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the sight of several bears, including a mother with three cubs. Watching them roam freely, hunting for clams along the low-tide coast at Katmai National Park, was nothing short of awe-inspiring. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but in Alaska, every moment feels like that.

Dropped in the Middle of Nowhere: Kenai Peninsula Wilderness

After the exhilarating bear-watching, I headed to the Kenai Peninsula. The plan? Get dropped off by boat somewhere in the middle of nowhere and explore. As the boat pulled away, leaving me standing alone on a homemade dock with nothing but the wilderness ahead, I had two choices: stay put or venture out. Naturally, I chose the latter. For two hours, I wandered through untamed terrain, marveling at the stunning landscape. Then, out of nowhere, I saw another bear in the wild. And not far from that, one of the most breathtaking glaciers I’ve ever laid eyes on. Despite having no idea where I was, it was a moment of pure Alaskan magic.

The Drive from Homer to Fairbanks: A Summer Transformation

Back in Homer, I grabbed dinner at the Homer Spit before hitting the road early the next morning for the long drive to Fairbanks. Having driven this route before in winter, I was amazed at how different the landscape looked in summer. The snow had melted, transforming the scenery into lush greenery and sweeping mountain vistas. It’s over 500 miles of winding roads, but every mile was worth it. Along the way, I stopped at my favorite pizza spot in Anchorage—Moose’s Tooth. Trust me, if you ever find yourself in Alaska, do yourself a favor and grab a slice here.

The Dalton Highway: Reaching the Arctic Circle

The next leg of my journey took me along the famous Dalton Highway, with my sights set on the Arctic Circle. This stretch of road is an adventure in itself, offering views that you just don’t get anywhere else. Along the way, I passed the Alyeska Pipeline, an engineering marvel, and crossed the mighty Yukon River. Eventually, I reached the Arctic Circle and snapped a picture with the iconic sign—a must-do for any Alaskan road tripper. My journey took me further north into the Brooks Range and through Atigun Pass, where I officially crossed the Continental Divide. The rugged beauty of the Brooks Range is a reminder of how vast and untouched Alaska truly is.

Coldfoot and the Gates of the Arctic National Park

After stopping in the small town of Coldfoot for a couple of days, I drove even farther north, eventually reaching the entrance to Gates of the Arctic National Park. This park is one of the most remote and least visited national parks in the U.S., accessible only by foot or bush plane. Standing at the edge of this vast wilderness, I felt the pull of the unknown and the uncharted, though the time had come to turn back.

The Final Leg: Back to Fairbanks and Home

The journey back to Fairbanks was a reflective one, as I boarded a small plane and soared over the landscapes I’d just traveled through. From the glaciers to the bears, the pipeline to the Arctic Circle, Alaska had shown me yet again why it’s a land of endless adventure. And although my trip ended as I returned to Miami, the memories of Alaska’s wild beauty will stay with me forever.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, Alaska is a place where the extraordinary is ordinary. Whether you’re bear-watching, hiking near glaciers, or crossing the Arctic Circle, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve explored another world. And believe me, you’ll be planning your return before you even leave.
